 Polished Pinctada Maxima Pearl Shell

This exquisite polished shell is from the Pinctada maxima — the magnificent gold-lipped oyster responsible for some of the world’s finest South Sea pearls. Each shell displays the signature luminous nacre that has made Broome pearls legendary.

The interior surface reveals breathtaking iridescence — soft silvers, creams, and warm golds blending into subtle pinks and greens under the light. The natural shape is elegantly curved with a distinctive “ear” and lip, polished to highlight the shell’s organic beauty while preserving its authentic character. Small natural imperfections and growth lines only add to its unique appeal.

Broome’s Pearling History

Broome has been the heart of Australia’s pearling industry since the late 1800s. Once the world’s largest pearling port, the town boomed with fleets of wooden luggers harvesting mother-of-pearl from the rich waters of the Kimberley coast. At its peak, thousands of divers — many from Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines — risked their lives for the prized shells. While natural pearling declined after the introduction of cultured pearls, Broome remains the spiritual home of Australian South Sea pearls, and Pinctada maxima shells like this one continue to celebrate that rich maritime heritage.
